McGree had professed his love for Birmingham and was ready to consider staying with Lee Bowyer’s Championship side. Indeed, his team-mate George Friend asked the club to keep telling McGree: “He’s been great. He’s a very good player.

‘He’s had a really tough time here because under [Aitor] Karanka, he just didn’t play, although every day in training he was arguably the best player.

“He’s been waiting and he’s got a great temper and personality – and most importantly, he’s a talented footballer, so I hope he can stay at a certain level.”

Birmingham was subsequently expected to try to make his move permanent, however the Celtic manager and fellow Aussie Ange Postecoglu is a confirmed admirer and wants to take McGree to the Scottish Premiership where he believes the point guard game play can have a big impact.

A number of Championship clubs have reportedly shown keen interest in McGree, who played for Australia in their World Cup qualifiers this year, but it seems increasingly likely that Celtic will fend off rival competition and the will convince to sign for them in the coming days.
